Jonathan Edwardsは1946, Aitkin, Minnesota州に生まれで国家公務員の家庭に育ち、その後Virginiaに転居します。父はJonathan を軍人の道に進ませるよう military schoolへ入学させますが、Jonathan はそれを嫌い画家としての道を選び Ohio に赴きのartschoolへ通うようにリます。幼い頃$29でギターを買い弾きはじめ自作の曲やCountry・Folk・ bluesなどを歌っていたJonathan は地元の local club やOhio Universityのstageにたつようになります。その頃はRock, Folkや Country,blues などを中心に歌っていたようです。その後、 HI schoolの同級生だったギターリストのMalcolm McKinney と意気投合し Joe DolceやMalcolm の弟のTod McKinneyやGary GansとSugar Creekと言うバンドを結成します。当時Sugar Creekは中西部で人気のあった Ohio Expresなどと音楽性やそのサウンドも近く、中西部でも人気を競い合うBandとして成長し地元での人気もかなり高かったそうです。その後、 New EnglandやBostonの音楽シーンを中心として活動するようになり1969年にSugar Creek "Please Tell a Friend" (1969 Metromedia?)と言うアルバムをリリースします。 メンバーはJohn(Jonathan) Edwards,guitarist Malcolm McKinney, Tod McKinney,Joe Dolce and Gary Gans といったメンバーで Rock,Folk,Country blues やWest Coastで流行っていた Acid Folk などを模した、オリジナリテイーを持った harmony bands であったと聞きます。彼らの音源は近年ＣＤ化されＬＰだけでなく聴くことが出来るようです。
John Edwards はその後Bostonで知り合ったProducer Peter Caspersonの勧めでソロ活動をするようになります。Peter CaspersonはすぐさまCapricorn Recordsとの契約を取り付け1ｓｔアルバム"Jonathan Edwards" (1971 Capricornw)をリリースします。このアルバムで歌われたJonathan Edwards の"Sunshine"は全米トップ100での月間4位年間37位の記録を残しています。
僕も"Sunshine"のヒットを契機に"Jonathan Edwards" (1971 Capricorn)を買った一人です。しかし、録音はBostonで行われ全体的に軽めのFolk,Countryアルバムで"Sunshine"一曲の一発屋じゃないかなどと思いあまり聴く気にはなりませんでした。
僕が目覚めたのは2NDアルバム "Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy" (1972 Atco)で、一曲目のStop and Start It All Again 重めのCountryRockで始まり最後のMorning Train (Traditional)は度肝を抜くパワーを秘めていてこのアルバムの聴き所でもあります。Jonathan のギターとハープの切れ味の鋭さは前作には到底及ばない力強さが感じ取れました。天才業師のBill Keithもいるのですが特筆すべきはStuart Schulman妙技ではないだろうか。「プエルトリコ・ポップフェステイバルではAllman Brothers Band や B. B. Kingを尻目にJonathan EdwardsとStuart Schulmanの二人がAcoustic Guitar二台と Harmonicaだけのパワーあふれる演奏で観衆を圧倒したと言われています。」"Morning Train"ではそんな噂も現実だったのだと確信できる演奏とパワーを披露しています。
3rdアルバム"Have a Good Time for Me" (1973 Atco)も自作曲は少ないですが"Sugar Creek"時代の盟友Malcolm McKinney・Joe Dolceの作品を取り上げています。Stuart Schulman・Bill Keithに加えDavid Brombergを起用し、2NDアルバムのパワーと切れ味を残し、聴き応えと安定感のある丁寧な作りのアルバムに仕上がっています。
その後Jonathanは1974年にライブアルバムを出しスタジオから一旦遠ざかっています。
そのような最中1975年友人の Emmylou Harrisの招聘に応じてL.Aへ旅立ちEmmylou Harrisの２ND アルバム"Elite Hotel"のサポートボーカルを務めています。
1976年にL.Aで"Rockin' Chair" (1976 Reprise)をリリースします。もちろんバッキングはEmmylou Harris' Hot Bandです。西海岸の爽やかな空気とJonathan Edwardsの柔和な人柄を最大限に引き出した暖かみのあるCountryRockアルバムで僕は大好きな一枚となっていますが一般的には評価が低くあまり語られていないのは残念な事です。内容もMike Brewerの"Hearts Overflowing" Willie P. Bennettの"White Line" Rodney Crowellの"Song for the Life"などの名曲ぞろいでアレンジもとても素晴らしいのです…。Jonathanの自作もBoston時代に比べ肩の力が抜けていてそこが彼の本質ではないかな？と思っているのは僕だけでしょうか。
West Coast Rockファンはどう思ってるんでしょうねぇ。。。
JonathanはもうBostonへ戻る気は全く無くなってしまったようで1977のアルバム"Sail Boat"もEmmylou Harris' Hot Bandです。Emmylou Harrisのお陰でThe Seldom Sceneとの交流も深まり、1985年にはJonathan Edwards & the Seldom Scene "Blue Ridge"を Sugar Hill からリリースJonathan Edwardsを再評価できる名盤です。また1997にリリースされた"Natural Thing" も後期Jonathan Edwardsのソロアルバムの中ではお勧めの一枚だと思います。

時代は変わり、Rock And Rollももう下火、音楽は常に進化と回帰を繰り返す。息永らえた者の心に訴えかける新たなサウンドに耳を傾けようではないか。そこには同年代一喜一憂した夢は等に消え、これぞ青春と思った過去の幻想のサウンドは、単に脳裏をかすめる次元をさかのぼった青春の思い出の一片にしか過ぎないのだ。あの青春を謳歌したRock And Rollも今は聴こえず、新たな息の中の過去の幻想に囚われている己の空しさを知る事となる。年老いた同年代の彼らも思考錯誤し新たなサウンドを模索し此処で奏でている。そんな僕らと同世代のアーチストの存在を現実のものとして、しっかりと目の当たりにし、年老いた自分の姿を鏡に映し現実の世界にに舞い戻る事だ。きっと君も僕もあの果敢な青春時代にはもう戻れないのだから…。

「パートリッジ・ファミリー(The Partridge Family)」は70年代初頭ABCで放映されたアメリカの連続TVドラマで、そのドラマに登場する架空のファミリー・バンドの物語です、日本でも放映されご存知の方も多いと思います。番組内で演奏されたパートリッジ・ファミリーの「悲しき初恋 (I Think I Love You)」は1970年12月のビルボードでシングルチャート1位を獲得するなど人気をはくし、彼らの初のシングル・ヒットとなりました。
パートリッジ・ファミリーの長男役で出演していたデヴィッド・キャシディは、その後俳優としてだけでなくアイドル歌手としての人気も獲得し、実際にソロ・ミュージシャン・ソングライターとして現在も活躍しています。本作"The Higher They Climb the Harder They Fall"はそのデヴィッド・キャシディの7枚目のソロアルバムです。
Bruce Johnston,Carl Wilson,Cyrus Faryar,Richie Furay,Jesse Ed Davis,Ned Doheny,Danny Kortchmar,Bill House,Jim Keltner,Jim Gordon,Leland Sklarなどあげたらきりが無い著名ミュージシャンが多数参加しての演奏と選曲・アレンジも素晴らしい一枚です。改めて今も聴けば聴くほどに極上ポップ・ロック・アルバムだと思いますよ。
David Cassidy "The Higher They Climb the Harder They Fall"は1974年にビーチボーイズ脱退後のブルース・ジョンストンとかつての盟友テリー・メルチャーが共同で設立したイクィノックス・プロダクションの製作アルバムの一枚です。ビル・ハウスの『Give Me A Break』、バリー・マンの『SURVIVOR』（1975）キャプテン＆テニールのファースト・アルバム（Love Will Keep Us Together）に「Disney Girls」と未発表の「I Write The Songs（歌の贈り物）」を提供などをしています。経営難のため1976年に閉鎖と短命に終わりましたが素晴らしい作品の数々は今後も語り継がれることとおもいます。

70年代から90年代までジャンルを超えた幅の広いアーチスト、ダイアナ・ロス、ベット・ミドラー、オリビア・ニュートンジョン、ポインターシスターズ、ディオンヌ・ワーウィック、シーナ・イーストン、ジェニファー・ホリディ、ボニー・レイエットなどの女性シンガーやバリー・マニロウ、ケニー・ロジャース、ピーボ・ブライソン、ジョー・コッカー、ケニー・ロギンスなどにも曲を提供しているメロディーメイカーとして名声を手にしたTom Snowと残念ながら他界してしまった盟友Michael Fondiler がともに在籍していたグループ"Country"です。録音はL.A、全曲Tom Snowと Michael Fondilerの作品でヒット曲は無いもののクオリティー高いカントリーロック・アルバムで僕は気に入っています。"Country"と言う名前からか日本では一部のファンのコレクターズアイテムとなっているのは残念な事です。Tom Snow脱退後幻の2ndアルバムが存在するというのも気になりますね。Tom Snow自信もソロアルバム"TAKING IT ALL IN STRIDE"(1975 Capitol)・TOM SNOW(1976 Capitol)・"HUNGRY NIGHTS"(1982 Arista)三枚を出していますが、これまたコレクターズアイテムとなっており希少価値で小生も未入手です。高価な彼のソロアルバムがあってもTom Snowって誰ですか？って聞かれちゃうと答えに困るし…。そこも問題です…。

テキサス州ダラスのバンドらしいのですが、録音はナッシュビルです。内容は切れの良いカントリーロックで、昔ブラック・ホークでも推奨盤として紹介されていました。僕も大好きなMichael Murpheyの"What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round"やGuy Clarkの"Broken Hearted People"ブレッドのDavid Gatesの"Yours for Life"のカバーを収録しています。メンバーの記載は全く無く5人のメンバーのうち判ったのはDick Kasper・Mike Ito・Billy Joe Howardの3人だけ。ナッシュビルのスタジオミュージシャンがよってたかって作った節もあり、かなり出来の良いサウンドのアルバムに仕上がっています。
尚、Mike Itoさんは当時渡米した純粋の日本人で現在もフィドル・バンジョー・フラットマンドリンのプレーヤーとしてご活躍とのこと。

アルバムジャケットの雰囲気から言ってカントリーロックなのかスワンプなのか？。どちらかと言うとスワンプ色がサウンド全体に押し出されています。出所不明ＬＡ録音の"Brown Dust"と言う無名のバンドです。ホーンセクションがメインのブラスロックバンドと思いがちなクレジットですが、さにあらずFrank・Paul・Carlosのバランスの良い若々しいコーラスが聴き所です。そして、クレジットはされていませんが、アルバム全体に流れるKeyboardとPianoがこのアルバムの特徴的な良い味付けになって全体を引き立てています。さて、このKeyboardとPianoはいったい誰が弾いているんでしょう？とても気になるところです。John Sebastianの"Do You Believe in Magic?"もアレンジも良く聴き所のひとつです。

Al Perkins を追いかけて。昔たどり着いたのがこの"SHILOH"でした。
南部スワンプ色の強いカントリーロックで愛聴盤の一枚ですが、当時は全くで評価も低かったと思います。元々はテキサスあたり出身の無名のバンドでした。天才ギターリストAl Perkins 加入後ＬＡへ赴き、Kenny Rogersの手によってプロデユースされたのが本作です。Al Perkins はともかくJim Ed Norman はナッシュビル名うてのプロデユーサーに転進し成功を収め、残念ながら僕がDon Henleyが居たのを知ったのは一番最後イーグルスへ参加後でした、他のメンバーMike BowdenとRichard BowdenもCold Steelなどに参加するなど"SHILOH"の存在は大きくＬＡ・ナッシュビルのミュージックシーンを語るに欠かせない歴史的な一枚のアルバムとなったのです。

スワンプ好きにはたまらぬ一枚がこの"Jinx" です。
残念ながら日本ではあまりシンガーソングライターとしては紹介されていませんし、経歴不詳で相当の悪党で刑務所の世話になったとも、足を洗いソングライターになったとも言われていますが、その真意はわかりません。録音はアラバマ州のブロードウェイ・スタジオで録音されTravis Wammackが参加しています。一曲目John Fogertyの"Proud Mary"からはじまり、ミシシッピー川を航行する船の上で撮られたジャケットに象徴される"River Song"など。全体的に切れの良いリズムとハープとのアンサンブルが特徴的で南部色を前編に押し出した秀作です。
